Goodbye 2023, Hello 2024: Campaign Season Preview
Come hear from some of the candidates that have announced their bids for 2024, and find out how to get involved!
We will meet at the South Valleys Library (15650A Wedge Parkway) on Monday, November 27, for our final meeting of the year where we will be pushing full steam ahead into the election season. We are very excited to hear from four of our local leaders about their upcoming elections: Washoe County School Board Trustee Beth Smith, Reno City Councilmember Naomi Duerr, Nevada Assemblywoman Angie Taylor, and Reno City Councilmember Miguel Martinez.
Trustee Smith won her seat in 2022, but because she had filled a vacancy on the board her seat is once again up for re-election in 2024. She also serves as Washoe County School Board President. Ms. Smith will reflect on her time as WCSB Trustee and President and let us know what her goals are for the future.
Councilmember Duerr has been a Reno City Council since 2014. In 2024, she will be running for State Senate District 15. Ms. Duerr will discuss how she has served South Washoe County on the city council and how she is looking to continue this work as a state senator.
Assemblywoman Taylor served as a Washoe County School Board Trustee before winning her election for Nevada State Assembly in 2022. Dr. Taylor will also be running for State Senate District 15, which is being vacated by Republican Heidi Gansert. She will discuss the race and her goals for the State Senate.
Councilmember Martinez is a Reno native who was appointed to serve on the council in 2022 to represent Ward 3. He has also been appointed to the Human Rights Commission, the Recreation and Parks Commission, and several other committees. Mr. Martinez will share with us how he has served his constituents in Reno and what he hopes to accomplish during his next term if he is re-elected in 2024.
Luiza Benisano, Campaign and Community Manager for Planned Parenthood Votes Nevada will also be joining us. She will be sharing crucial information about a recent petition by Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom to place a question on the 2024 ballot that would amend the state constitution to include several important protections for reproductive freedom.
South Washoe DEMS will be striving to bring significant action items to our members, so we can help to elect local Democrats and promote positive change throughout our community. Trustee Smith, Councilmember Duerr, Assemblywoman Taylor, and Councilmember Martinez will let our members know how they can get involved in their campaigns.
Join us at 5:30 PM on November 27 for social time, refreshments, and festive pies. The meeting portion of our program will begin at 6 PM. Please wear your favorite holiday sweaters/tops as we celebrate the holiday season and the last official South Washoe DEMS meeting of 2023!
