Judicial Forum: Meet the Candidates, Learn about the Importance of Judges in Society, and Find Out How You Can Support Judicial Campaigns
The unprecedented overruling of Roe v. Wade has shown us just how essential the judiciary is to our rights and to our lives. Although no Supreme Court seat will be explicitly on any of our ballots, there will be a whole host of other judicial seats on our ballot this November. These local, non-partisan judicial races may not get as much attention as the other non-partisan races do, but the positions are essential and important to our Democracy. Local judges make decisions regarding misdemeanors including DUIs and domestic violence, they have a role in keeping communities safe, they protect the rights of all citizens, they deal with criminal cases, they work with vulnerable populations, and they have the capacity to change and transform lives.
This month, we are dedicating our meeting to these races. The judicial candidates will share their professional stories with you, will explain the roles and responsibilities of their jobs, and will answer your questions. They will also share information about how you can support their races in the months and weeks leading up to Election Day.
The following judicial candidates will be joining us on August 29th at the South Valleys Library and on ZOOM. Our hope is that this hybrid format will allow for those who may not be able to travel to the library or to attend an in-person meeting to still be a part of this exciting night:
The format for the meeting will be as follows:
- Candidates will share a brief biographical history
- Candidates will explain the roles and responsibilities of their elected position
- Candidates will discuss issues of importance as they relate to their positions
- Candidates will answer questions from in-person attendees and online viewers
- Candidates will give a brief closing statement.
The in person and online session will open at 5:30 p.m. for a social period until 6 p.m. Refreshments will be provided for in-person attendees. The formal meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. and conclude by 7:30 p.m. While at this time South Washoe DEMS does not require masks for its in-person meetings, they are recommended, as is attending on ZOOM if you are not feeling well on the day of the event.
Attendees will be asked to sign in at the library, and ZOOM attendees must register in advance at this link.
