Serving Lunch at Record Street
Next Lunch Serving - November 25, 2018

Lunch at Record StreetAfter hearing the presentation from Occupy Reno at our March 2012 meeting and learning about their involvement in serving meals to Reno's homeless, there was a great deal of enthusiasm in our group for the South Washoe DEMS to get involved. Since then, we have been working with the Reno Community Assistance Center serving Lunch at Record Street where we are continuing to serve lunch on the 4th Sunday of each month at noon. (Upcoming dates are November 25th, December 23rd, January 27th & February 24th)

Food suggestions are: (Please have food pre-wrapped in baggies, etc. for easy serving.)

  • canned chicken and tuna
  • fruit cups
  • soft fruits such as bananas and cuties
  • bread - can be frozen to be used later
  • bottled water
  • plastic sandwich bags
  • small paper lunch bags
  • slice meats and cheeses the week of the lunch
  • cookies - these are always well received!

In addition, we collect hotel toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc. When you travel, anything provided by hotels are easy to collect and easy for us to distribute to the clients.

If you are interested in volunteering by providing food, water, paper products, toiletries, transportation of goods, serving and clean up, please contact Deborah Kladney at our SWD email. This will really help us avoid duplication of foods and service. We will pick up donations or you may bring them to any of our meetings.

This is a wonderful way to help our community and you'll feel good driving home. We hope you can be involved in some way for our next lunch on November 25th.

The Eddy House
Next Lunch Serving - ON HOLD

The Eddy House LogoThe Eddy House (eddyhouse.org/Open in a New Window) is Northern Nevada's central intake and assessment facility for homeless and at-risk youth. Their mission is to work with homeless and at-risk youth to develop life and job skills necessary for a sustainable independence. The South Washoe DEMS has been involved with the Eddy House since 2017 and we are now bringing in box lunches on the 2nd Thursday of each month. Unlike our Record Street lunches, we will not be serving there. Lunches will be served by The Eddy House staff.

Due to changes requested by Eddy House, this project is "on hold" until late in 2018.

Food suggestions include: (Please have food pre-wrapped in baggies, etc. for easy serving.)

  • Drinks, no sodas
  • Savory snacks (chips or crackers)
  • Sweets (small pack of cookies, fruit snacks/cups,pudding)
  • Proteins (beef Jerky, nuts, trail mix, chicken/tuna in a pouch)
  • Bars (granola, protein, fig)
  • Treats (something small like a mini chocolate)
  • Nnapkin/wet wipes

In addition, we collect hotel toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc. When you travel, anything provided by hotels are easy to collect and easy for us to distribute to the clients. We also donate socks.

If you are interested in volunteering by providing food, water, paper products, toiletries, and transportation of goods, please contact Deborah Kladney at our SWD email. This will really help us avoid duplication of foods and service. We will pick up donations or you may bring them to any of our meetings.

RTC Bus Passes for the
Reno Community Assistance Center
and The Eddy House

RTC Logo

The goal of the Reno Community Assistance Center is first to provide food and shelter to their clients but beyond that, they work with people to help them find jobs, counseling, and housing. Another way we can help them is to provide RTC Bus Passes. Staff can then distribute these on an "as needed" basis to help clients when they go on a job interview, a medical appointment, etc.

The South Washoe DEMS has decided to expand our involvement with the Reno Community Assistance Center by donating Bus Passes to them throughout the year. We kicked this off this at our 2012 Holiday Party and will continue the project into the future. Through October, 2018, we have donated 304 single ride passes plus 732 Day Passes (formerly called 24 Hour passes) to the Reno Community Assistance Center and to The Eddy House!

The Center needs the adult Day Pass that cost $9.00 for 3 passes ($3.00/pass). Bus Passes may be purchased in four ways:

  1. Online at the RTC websiteOpen in a New Window, using a VISA or MasterCard – (No Username or Password Required)

  2. In person at any of the RTC pass outlet locations The list of locations maybe found in the RTC "Bus Book", on pages 10-11. (Click here for a link to the "Bus Book"Open in a New Window)

  3. Buy them from our Treasurer at any regular meeting (Check payable personally to the treasurer, not to South Washoe DEMS)

Going forward, we plan to continue this project into the future. Any Bus Passes you purchase yourself, bring them to any South Washoe DEMS meeting or call us (775-849-9585) and we will arrange to pick them up from you. Thank you for your continued support!

Clothing Drive

SocksIn January 2013, we learned from the Reno Community Assistance Center staff of the important need their clients have for clothing. Our Steering Committee then decided we would like to help so we donated $100.00 from our treasury and bought warm socks. These were passed out during our January, 2013 lunch serving and were very well received and appreciated.

Since then, we have continued to collect socks and underwear to hand out while we serve lunch during the fall and winter months. Begining in late 2017, after having representatives from The Eddy House speak to us about their program and needs, we started to collect clothing for them as well.

The Eddy House is particularily in need of socks, underwear and bras for homeless, runaway, foster and other at-risk youth (ages 12-24). 70% of these youth are male. Their 'Wish List' includes:

  • Women's Low-Rise Underwear (XS-XL)
  • Sports Bras All Sizes
  • Hanes T-Shirts Black (SM-2XL)Toiletries
  • Boxer Brief Men's (SM-2XL)

Both the Reno Community Assistance Center and The Eddy House also can use "sample sized" Toiletries. This especially includes Deodorant and all types of Moisturizers with SPF for the faace and hands. Please save these items when you are traveling so they may be put to good use.

All of these items - clothing and tolietries - may be donated at any South Washoe DEMS event.

Our KTMB Sign on Wedge ParkwaySWD Clean-Up CrewNext Clean-Up Date - November 10, 2018

In conjunction with Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (ktmb.orgOpen in a New Window), the South Washoe DEMS have adopted Wedge Parkway - between Arrowcreek Parkway and the Mt. Rose Highway. Look for our sign as you travel south just before the library.

At least 3 times per year, we clean up debris on this stretch of road. KTMB supplies volunteers with orange vests and garbage bags.

Thank you to those who where there to help at our last "Clean-Up" on November 10, 2018. Check back here or in the newsletter for our next "Clean-Up date. Here are some pictures from a previous clean-up event...
