Fixing Nevada's Mental Health System

How does Nevada deliver mental health services to our growing and diverse population? Which programs have proven effective? Where is the greatest need? What about funding? What services does the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) offer?

Our speaker this month is Robin V. Reedy, Executive Director for NAMI Nevada, who will address Nevada's mental health crisis. Robin will discuss the recent changes in Nevada mental health law, the programs NAMI offers the community free of charge, and NAMI's ongoing role in fixing Nevada's mental health system. We hope you'll join us for a most informative evening.

Correction:
New Opportunity for the Nevada Caucus 2020

Last month we explained three options to participate in the 2020 Nevada Caucus. Soon after we published the Newsletter, NV Dems announced that the option to Vote virtually BY PHONE was eliminated due to security concerns. Please note these 2 options to participate in the 2020 Caucus:
  1. Caucus with neighbors in your precinct on Saturday, February 22, 2020. Caucus locations will be announced by January 15, 2020. New Democratic voters can register to vote at their Caucus Day site.
  2. *New* Vote early IN PERSON at any site in Washoe County on any of these days: Saturday, February 15 - Tuesday, February 18. Early Vote locations will be announced by October 1, 2019. New Democratic voters can register to vote at any early vote site.
You must be a registered Democrat to participate in the Nevada Democratic Caucus. Please update your voter registration information by visiting caucus.nvdems.com. You can register to vote the same day at any early vote site or Caucus Day site.

Please plan to participate in the 2020 Nevada Caucus!

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, November 7, 2019 at 6:00 pm hosted by Fred and Millie May. Their home is located in Damonte Ranch at 2455 Makenna Drive, Reno NV 89521. To let the Mays know you are coming, please email them.

Our next book is Upheaval: Turning Points for Nations in Crisis, by Jared Diamond.
In his international bestsellers Guns, Germs and Steel and Collapse, Jared Diamond transformed our understanding of what makes civilizations rise and fall. Now, in his third book in this monumental trilogy, he reveals how successful nations recover from crises while adopting selective changes -- a coping mechanism more commonly associated with individuals recovering from personal crises.

In this book, Diamond compares how six countries have survived recent upheavals -- ranging from the forced opening of Japan by U.S. Commodore Perry's fleet, to the Soviet Union's attack on Finland, to a murderous coup or countercoup in Chile and Indonesia, to the transformations of Germany and Austria after World War Two. Because Diamond has lived and spoken the language in five of these six countries, he can present gut-wrenching histories experienced firsthand. These nations coped, to varying degrees, through mechanisms such as acknowledgment of responsibility, painfully honest self-appraisal, and learning from models of other nations. Looking to the future, Diamond examines whether the United States, Japan, and the whole world are successfully coping with the grave crises they currently face. Can we learn from lessons of the past?

Adding a psychological dimension to the in-depth history, geography, biology, and anthropology that mark all of Diamond's books, Upheaval reveals factors influencing how both whole nations and individual people can respond to big challenges. The result is a book epic in scope, but also his most personal book yet.
The book is available in hardback, paperback, eBook and audio from your local or online bookstores.
