Get Informed on Question 3 - The Energy Initiative

Come to our July meeting and learn all about Nevada Question 3, "The Legislature to Minimize Regulations on the Market and Eliminate Legal Monopolies Amendment." If passed, this initiative would add a new section to Article 1 of the Nevada Constitution, making it "the policy of this State that all electricity markets be open and competitive so that all customers are afforded meaningful choices among different providers."

This is a high stakes question with impressive support and arguments on both sides and over $31,000,000 combined campaign funds raised so far, according to Ballotpedia. We are featuring two speakers - Erik Jimenez, speaking in support of Q3, and Mike Roberson, speaking in opposition. There will be plenty of time for questions. Don't miss this opportunity to get educated on this important energy question.
Our meeting location is at the:

South Valleys Library.
15650 Wedge Pkwy
Reno, NV 89511
[see map at Our Next Events page of the South Washoe DEMS website]

There is no admission charge.  Our meetings start at 5:30 p.m. with a social time where we serve light appetizers. Donations are welcome to cover the cost of appetizers. Please invite your friends as we welcome both new and long time members to our meetings. We look forward to seeing you!
We had another enjoyable summer evening at our Picnic in the Pines on June 4th. Thanks again to our hosts, Debbie and Dave Kladney, for opening their home for our socializing and relaxing.

The winner of our 50/50 raffle generously donated his winnings back to us! Unfortunately, we don't have the winner's name. Please let us know who you are so we can recognize your thoughtfulness!
Our monthly meeting date is the first MONDAY of the month.
SAVE the DATE: Monday, August 6th for our next meeting at the South Valleys Library on Wedge Parkway.

Spring Neighborhood Gatherings
Thank You for Making Our Neighborhood Outreach Successful

Thank you, thank you to all the volunteers, candidates, and attendees who made our Spring and Summer neighborhood meetings possible in 2018. Our final meeting was hosted by Cecelia and Dennis Colling in the Virginia Foothills. We had a wonderful in depth discussion with candidates Autumn Zemke (Assembly District 40), Tina Davis-Hersey (State Senate District 16), and Steve Wolgast (County Commission District 2).
These meetings could not happen without our team of organizers, callers, facilitators, hosts, and of course the candidates. In the last year, 25 members have stepped up to host a total of 26 meetings. Several of these hosts held two or three gatherings. Our team of ten callers made an estimate of 3,500 to 4,000 phone calls and texts. Seven facilitators, aided by a dozen assistants, made sure the meetings ran well. We held gatherings in neighborhoods throughout the south county. We hope you were able to attend one of these meetings and hear from our Democratic candidates.

It's summer now and people are busy with family and vacation so we're closing this chapter of neighborhood gatherings. But we all know the work is not done. In the fall, we are happy to pair interested candidates with home hosts so, together, they can coordinate house parties for the various campaigns. If you are interested in hosting a candidate, contact Suzy Williams

We are hoping our team of amazing volunteers will be making calls, knocking on doors, registering voters, training new folks, hosting events – doing all the things that bring home our WIN in the fall. Enjoy your summer, and think BLUE.

New! Precinct Captain Leadership Academy

We are repeating this announcement from last month due to its importance: The Precinct Captain Leadership Academy has been launched. The Academy is dedicated to recruiting, training and mentoring our next generation of precinct leaders here in Washoe County. This program is a shorter version of the highly successful Field Organizing Leadership Academy held in 2007, 2008 & 2009. This is a community-based initiative (not campaign-based) committed to long-term neighborhood engagement and activism.

Three cycles of the Academy will be offered this summer. Each class is limited to 20 participants and all participants must complete the 3 training modules to graduate.

The first class will be held this week:
Thursday, June 28th 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Rounds Bakery, 294 E. Moana, Reno.

Please email Sandy Scott or call at (775) 378-1545 for questions and to become a leader in your precinct.

South Washoe DEMS Cares:
Lunch at Record Street and Eddy House

Thanks to the dedicated volunteers we have served about 200 lunches at the Reno Assistance Center on Record Street once a month for about 6 years.

We have now ventured into providing lunch at Eddy House, a location/program serving homeless youth. We provided 50 lunches on the 14th of June. The organization has given us a trial period of three months and they will then decide if they want us to continue. I'm sure they will as our sandwich makers provide delicious, healthy sandwiches!

As a reminder, we serve lunch at Record Street on the forth Sunday of each month, and at Eddy House on the second Thursday of each month. If you would like to participate in either of these programs please contact Debbie Kladney at 775-849-0545, 775-846-1724, or via e-mail.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, July 25, 2018 at 6:30 pm hosted by Joyce Destefanis and Dave Penning. Their home is located in the Saddlehorn community at 14210 Powder River Court (from Thomas Creek Road, turn west onto Saddlehorn Drive and then south onto Powder River Court.) See map inside our Book Club webpage.

Our next book is Dear Madam President: An Open Letter to the Women Who Will Run the World, by Jennifer Palmieri.

Redefine the expectations for women in leadership roles with this New York Times bestselling volume of inspiring advice by the former communications director for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
Framed as an empowering letter from former Hillary Clinton Communications Director Jennifer Palmieri to the first woman president, and by extension, to all women working to succeed in any field, Dear Madam President is filled with forward-thinking, practical advice for all women who are determined to seize control of their lives-from boardroom to living room.

As a country, we haven't wrapped our heads around what it should look like for a woman to be in the job of President. Our only models are men. While wildly disappointed by the outcome of the 2016 election, Palmieri argues that our feelings-confusion, love, hate, acceptance-can now open the country up to reimagining women in leadership roles. And that is what Palmieri takes on in this book-redefining expectations for women looking to lead and creating a blueprint for women candidates and leaders to follow. Dear Madam President will turn the results of the 2016 election into something incredibly empowering for graduates, future female leaders, and independent thinkers everywhere.

"My book explained what happened and where we need to go from here. Jennifer Palmieri picks up the ball and runs with it in this book. It's about being a woman, working for a woman, and telling the stories of the personal and professional ups and downs that all women need to hear as we chart our individual and collective futures." ― Hillary Rodham Clinton

"A powerful, personal, and sometimes painful book written for any woman who has ever thought of becoming a leader. I hope it inspires more women and girls because their voices and their leadership are needed now more than ever." ― Madeleine Albright

"With her searing honestly, Jennifer Palmieri writes about loss, despair, and that flicker of hope that keeps us getting up and striving day after day. America's first woman president should keep this book on her desk and read it every morning." ― Nicolle Wallace

"DEAR MADAM PRESIDENT is a book that every parent should encourage their daughters-and their sons-to read." ― Cory Booker

"Our first woman president, whomever she may be, will no doubt be wise and open enough to seek advice from the best in the business. The advice and insights Jennifer Palmieri has garnered from years on the frontlines of politics and life will make any leader better." ― Maria Shriver

The book is available in hardcover, paperback and eBook formats from your local or online bookstores.

Please email Joyce for updates or details. For more information about our current book, a list of articles, and past books we have reviewed, visit our Book Club webpage.
