When Democrats Talk, What Do Voters Hear?

An Evening with Paul Speirs-Hernandez

If our mission is to elect Democrats, our speaker this month says we have seven seconds to win the audience: VOTERS.  Just seven seconds.  So what must happen in those few seconds?  What do you really want voters to hear? Join us on June 3rd and learn how to craft your message in speeches, emails, letters to the editor, newsletters, media interviews, and more.

Paul Speirs-Hernandez is a communications and public relations expert and internationally published author.  He is the founder and president of Steinbeck Communications and the Second Vice Chair of the Nevada State Democratic Party.  He has been honored as one of the Top 40 Business People Under 40 in Las Vegas.

Notes from the Chair -
Nevada Legislature Makes National News!

That's right! Our own state legislature hit the big time with an excellent feature story in, none other than, the Washington Post! The article focused on our female-majority legislature – the FIRST in the nation – and how it has made a significant difference in the tone, conversations, activities, types of issues addressed and bills put forward. It also points out the ethnic diversity that exists among that group. It's a great read!

So… just in case you missed it, here's the link:

Relish this rare moment. Nevada's finally #1 (in a positive way!). Enjoy!

Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful - May 11th Cleanup!

As part of Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful's (KTMB) 'Adopt-A-Spot' program, South Washoe DEMS cleans Wedge Parkway 3 times a year. Our last KTMB cleanup was Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 9:00 am. Much trash was collected, and the volunteers enjoyed exceptional weather. We thank our volunteers for their participation in this Cleanup.

South Washoe DEMS Cares: Lunch at Record Street

Again, a heartfelt THANK YOU goes to all the volunteers who have made this program a huge success. Because of your generosity we continue to serve over two hundred people a healthy sack lunch each month. After more than eight years we are way over serving 10,000 lunches. YOU ALL ROCK!

Because of overcrowding at the Assistance Center the powers that be are considering moving food distribution to an off campus sight - yet to be determined. I will let everyone know when the change happens and where we will serve.

If you would like to be involved with this program please contact me via e-mail debbiekladney@gmail.com, or phone, 775-849-0545, 775-846-1724. I thank you all in advance for your involvement and generosity.

RTC "Day Bus Passes" Donations

Our members continue their generous support of our South Washoe DEMS Bus Passes Project! In May 2019, we donated another 51 Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) "Day Bus Passes" to the Reno Community Assistance Center. These passes help the Center's clients get to their medical appointments, job interviews, etc. We purchase Day Bus Passes in increments of 3 passes for $9.00.

Since 2013, we have provided 304 Single Rides (we no longer donate these) and 784 Day Bus Passes. Over the years, 21 different people (singles and couples) have donated. In addition, we have used raffle proceeds 3 times. We thank all the people who have supported the SWD Bus Passes project since its inception in 2013.

For more information about our Bus Passes Project, see our South Washoe DEMS Community Projects on our website. To contribute to this Project, please email Reed Williams.
South Washoe Community Outreach:
Are You Fire Ready?

On April 24, South Washoe DEMS joined with several community groups and fire fighting agencies to sponsor a community program, Are You Fire Ready? at South Valleys Library. Spearheaded by several of our leaders in Virginia Foothills, Toll Road/Kivett Lane, and Steamboat/Pleasant Valleys, the program brought together Save Rural Nevada, Pleasant Steamboat Valleys Landowners Association, UNR Extension, Truckee Meadows Fire Department, US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Nevada Division of Forestry, and South Valley Volunteer Fire Department to share information about how they coordinate during fire emergencies and on preparing our homes and properties for the coming fire season. Like South Washoe DEMS' other community outreach programs, the meeting was free, open to the public, and not political. Fire prevention reaches across party lines and this was an opportunity to demonstrate, again, that Democrats are committed to a safe and caring community for everyone.

Attendance was light but everyone there was pleased with the program. The planning and execution of a project with so many parts gave us a good blueprint for doing this again as summer arrives and more people have fire prevention on their minds. We hope to repeat the program in Washoe Valley and perhaps in the Galena/Callahan Ranch areas where the interface of wild lands with suburban houses makes fire especially likely and dangerous. Watch the website and this newsletter for more information over the summer.

South Washoe DEMS Book Club
June 27, 2019

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, June 27, 2019 at 6:00 pm hosted by Joyce Destefanis and Dave Penning. Their home is located in the Saddlehorn community at 14210 Powder River Court (from Thomas Creek Road, turn west onto Saddlehorn Drive and then south onto Powder River Court.) See map inside our Book Club webpage.

Our next book is Factfulness: Ten Reasons We're Wrong About the World - and Why Things Are Better Than You Think by Hans Rosling.
When asked simple questions about global trends―what percentage of the world's population live in poverty; why the world's population is increasing; how many girls finish school―we systematically get the answers wrong. So wrong that a chimpanzee choosing answers at random will consistently outguess teachers, journalists, Nobel laureates, and bankers.

In Factfulness, Professor of International Health and global TED phenomenon Hans Rosling, together with his two long-time collaborators, Anna and Ola, offers a radical new explanation of why this happens. They reveal the ten instincts that distort our perspective―from our tendency to divide the world into two camps (usually some version of us and them) to the way we consume media (where fear rules) to how we perceive progress (believing that most things are getting worse).

Our problem is that we don't know what we don't know, and even our guesses are informed by unconscious and predictable biases.

It turns out that the world, for all its imperfections, is in a much better state than we might think. That doesn't mean there aren't real concerns. But when we worry about everything all the time instead of embracing a worldview based on facts, we can lose our ability to focus on the things that threaten us most.

Inspiring and revelatory, filled with lively anecdotes and moving stories, Factfulness is an urgent and essential book that will change the way you see the world and empower you to respond to the crises and opportunities of the future.
The book is available in hardback, paperback, eBook and audio from your local or online bookstores.
Please email Joyce for updates or details. For more information about our current book, a list of articles, and past books we have reviewed, visit our Book Club webpage.
