The South WashoeDEMS was a pilot project started in 2011 and later became an affiliate of teh Washoe County Dempoocratic Party. Here you can review the accomplishments of what we've done each year.

  6. Continued our South Washoe DEMS page on Meetup.com, ending the year with 141 members (an increase of 77 members!).

Special Events and Activities

  1. The South Washoe DEMS Book Club met 4 times in 2017 and continues to meet monthly, generally on the 2nd Thursday of the month.
  2. Hosted more than a dozen Neighborhood Organizing meetings. Through these meetings, we met new democrats and laid groundwork for the 2018 elections.
  3. Many South Washoe DEMS participated in the Women's March in January.
  4. During the 2017 Legislative session, we sent a weekly status update on some of the important bills of interest. This was done through our new Legislative Alerts email system. After the end of the session, in our August newsletter, we made available an analysis of Assemblyperson, Lisa Krasner's (R-AD26) voting record and started the search for a democratic challenger to this important south end Assembly District.
  5. In October, assisted at The Eddy House with their Halloween Party by volunteering and providing donations.
  6. Prior to the November meeting, 5 SWD volunteers walked the precinct (#8240) near the South Valleys Library to encourage neighbors to join us at our upcoming meeting. Over 100 doors were knocked on as well as many flyers were left at the doorsteps.
  7. In December, we provided a Friday Family Meal at The Eddy House.

South Washoe DEMS Projects

  1. Lunch at Record Street – we served 150 to 200 lunches on the 4th Sunday of each month. We have been serving meals here since March, 2012 - over 11,000 healthy lunches served!
  2. Bus Passes – as another way to help clients at the Reno Community Assistance Center, we continued collecting RTC Bus Passes. Through 2017, we provided 48 additional 24 Hour passes for a total of 474 24 Hour passes and 304 individual passes donated since 2012. (NOTE: in early January, we will be donating approximately another 150 passes to both Reno Community Assistance Center and to The Eddy House.)
  3. Socks – in the winter months, we passed out warm socks and hotel toiletries while serving lunch at Record Street.
  4. Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful –we continued to sponsor roadside cleanup of Wedge Parkway (between Arrowcreek Parkway and the Mount Rose Highway). In 2017, we held clean-ups on March 25th and October 7th. For our sponsorship, there is a SWD sign close to the South Valleys Library on Wedge Pkwy.
  5. During 2017, we held two rounds of Neighborhood Gathering meetings - the first round in June and the second round in October/November. There were a total of 12 meeting in neighborhoods throughout the south county.

Special Events and Activities

  2. The South Washoe DEMS Book Club met 4 times in 2016 and continues to meet monthly, generally on the 2nd Thursday of the month. There were fewer meetings in 2016 due to the election activities.

South Washoe DEMS Projects

  1. Lunch at Record Street – we served 150 to 200 lunches on the 4th Sunday of each month. We have been serving meals here since March, 2012 - over 8,700 healthy lunches served!
  2. Bus Passes – as another way to help clients at the Reno Community Assistance Center, we continued collecting RTC Bus Passes. Through 2016, we provided 228 additional 24 Hour passes for a total of 426 24 Hour passes and 304 individual passes donated since 2012.
  3. Socks – in the winter months, we passed out warm socks and hotel toiletries while serving lunch at Record Street.
  4. Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful –we continued to sponsor roadside cleanup of Wedge Parkway (between Arrowcreek Parkway and the Mount Rose Highway). In 2016, we held clean-ups on March 19th and September 10th. In addition, we volunteered for a city-wide clean-up at Damonte Ranch Park on June 11th. For our sponsorship, there is a SWD sign close to the South Valleys Library on Wedge Pkwy.
  5. We held 11 Caucus Training Meetings, hosted in homes throughout the neighborhoods prior to the February 20th Caucus.
  6. We helped pick apples and pears in Washoe Valley to support the Friends in Service Helping (FISH) organization of Northern Nevada.
  7. We sponsored 4 Up & Down the Ticket neighborhood gatherings to talk about the local candidates and issues being voted on at the General Election.
  8. During the final phases of the General Election, we feed the volunteers at the WashoeDEMS HQ once a week. Also many South Washoe DEMS members helped both local and national candidates and with the GOTV effort at the Bell Street staging location.

For our sponsorship, there is a SWD sign close to the South Valleys Library.

  3. Socks – in the winter months, we passed out warm socks while serving lunch at Record Street. In addition to many individual donations, the SWDs donated over 100 pairs from our treasury.
  4. Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful –we sponsor roadside cleanup of Wedge Parkway (between Arrowcreek Parkway and the Mount Rose Highway). In 2013, we held clean-ups on April 13 and October 19. For our sponsorship, there is a SWD sign close to the South Valleys Library.
  5. Letters to the Editor – working with the Washoe DEMS, we continued supporting the Letters to the Editor campaign held on the 4th Tuesday of each month at HQs.

  2. Apple Gleaning – with the abundant crop on local fruit trees, we held multiple fruit picking events and donated the food to local food banks and made applesauce for the lunches at Record Street.
  3. Activists in Action – in the Fall, we held extra monthly workshops on various how-to topics.
  4. Bus Passes – as another way to help clients at the Reno Community Assistance Center, we started collecting RTC Bus Passes and will continue doing this into the future.
  5. Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful –we sponsor roadside cleanup of Wedge Parkway (between Arrowcreek Parkway and the Mount Rose Highway). Our 1st clean-up party was in December. For our sponsorship, there is now a SWD sign close to the South Valleys Library.
  6. Letters to the Editor – through one of our Activists in Action workshops, we started a project of having member write letters to the editor of local newspapers.
